My practice has always been about the balance between technical exploration and conceptual realisation.
It is the process of making that drives the idea, consideration of the inherent language of materials, how in combination that vocabulary can be explored and exchanged.
This approach provides a framework for development, initial structures allowing for the accidental to be incorporated and extend the meaning of the work. This framework is established using resistant materials, wood, glass, plastic and metals, at which point more fluid, ephemeral materials and found objects are introduced to change the context of the piece.
Earlier works would imply function but offer only frustrating, disabled solutions and relate to individual physical and intellectual restrictions through memory and age, the contradictions of faith and fate.
Increasingly these themes of frailty in the human condition have become part of an attempt to explore broader ideas of systemic dysfunction, momentary transcendence and vicarious existence. This new work, in immediate reflection, seems to suggest a dereliction/precarious nature in these established forms, less formal than previously. The extensive scale has resulted in less resolute structures and consequently an inability to contain some of the materials involved.
